New international success for the Schola Cantorum Cantus Fugiens: First Prize at the Barcelona Competition on Home Ground

Barcelona, 8 November 2025 – The International Gregorian Chant Competition organised by the FCEC concluded with a remarkable success for the Schola Cantorum Cantus Fugiens, the only female choir participating in the competition. Performing on home ground in Barcelona, the ensemble was awarded First Prize, confirming once again its growing reputation on the international scene. The group distinguished itself in both the compulsory repertoire and the pieces of its own choosing, demonstrating stylistic coherence, musical sensitivity and a refined balance of voices. The jury particularly appreciated the clarity of phrasing and the ensemble’s ability to combine scholarly awareness with a vivid and expressive performance.
Under the direction of Chiara Mazzoletti, the schola showed full command of the semiological interpretation of the medieval Gregorian tradition, approaching the sources with rigour and musical intelligence. At the same time, the programme highlighted the conductor’s versatility, extending confidently into repertoire from later periods and revealing a broad and thoughtful artistic vision.
This latest achievement represents another important milestone for Cantus Fugiens, confirming the ensemble’s commitment to the study, performance and dissemination of Gregorian chant at the highest artistic level.
