Who we are
The Schola Cantorum Cantus Fugiens was founded in the autumn of 2022 in Barcelona as a mixed vocal ensemble, on the initiative of its director, Chiara Mazzoletti, and co-director, Francesco Orio, with the aim of creating a space dedicated to the performance of Gregorian chant according to a historically informed practice. From spring 2024, the Schola took on a new identity as a female ensemble, made up of young singing students, instrumentalists, and enthusiasts of the medieval repertoire. Since its foundation, the Schola has been active across Catalonia with concerts, liturgical participation, lecture-recitals in university settings, and contributions to specialist conferences.
Among its most notable appearances in the past year are performances in the season of the Pro Música Sacra Foundation (Granollers), on the programme of the Auditori (Barcelona), and at the 4th edition of the Gender Sounds Festival (ESMUC, Barcelona). The Schola has made the first-ever recording of the Gregorian Mass pro mulieribus pregnantibus, in collaboration with Prof. Ascensión Mazuela-Anguita (University of Granada), author of the forthcoming scholarly study on this repertoire. The ensemble enjoys the patronage of leading local institutions, including the City Council of Barcelona, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya.
In 2024 it was awarded the Barcelona Crea artistic research grant for the biennium 2024–2025 with the project Calidoscopium Muliebris Mediaevalis, which is still ongoing.
In August 2025 it won the prestigious Micrologus Prize in the category of liturgical monodic chant at the 73rd International Polyphonic Competition of the city of Arezzo. In Novembre 2025 the Schola is back on the podium at the Barcelona International Gregorian Chant Competition.
